Routledge Press has recently produced a book on the subject of Bisexuality and Same-Sex Marriage. I investigated it.
What do the aforementioned bisexual activists feel about the issue of one person at a time down the altar, or does it discriminate against polyamorous bisexuals (lesbians, gays and heterosexuals?) Here’s one problem I can see- from my own perception of the bisexual communities, they seem divided between those who engage in polyamory, and those who engage in alternating gender serial monogamy. Some bisexual polyamorists might therefore feel that monogamous marriage restrictions discriminate against their relationship choices, and therefore, ‘queer’ LGBTs should oppose same-sex monogamous marriage proper because of this.
Er, not so fast. Exactly where does this leave alternating gender serial monogamous bisexuals and monogamous lesbians, gay men and transpeople? What about actually existing discrimination and exclusion against monogamous same-sex couples, whatever they designate as their sexual identity?
I am not opposed to bisexual (and lesbian, gay, transgender or heterosexual) Â polyamorous relationship rights, and indeed, I look forward to seeing some more comprehensive debates and evidence-based research defending the strengths of polyamorous relationships compared to monogamous ones. However, the ‘queer’ anti-assimilationist stance sometimes strikes me as if it is distant from the struggles of monogamous LGBT folk.
