The Call: To Discrimination, Exclusion and Hatemongering

Posted by: Craig Young

On November 1, an estimated 100,000 fundamentalists will engage in an exhibitionistic extravaganza against recognition of same-sex marriage in California, assembling in San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. It is allegedly the culmination of a forty day fast designed to get fundamentalists voting for Proposition 8, a Californian anti-gay referendum option which will prevent recognition of same-sex marriage through passage of a state constitutional amendment.

To us hardened secularists and sceptics, the Call’s Pentecostalese might sound a tad off the wall. Lou Engle wants his fellow Pentecostal fundamentalists to oppose “state-sanctioned, state endorsed legalised immorality and the “Elijah-Jezebel” showdown. To translate that into English, “Jezebel spirit” means that the Pentecostal in question thinks that there is an (amputee?) female demonic presence that likes sex in your immediate vicinity, and thinks that by engaging in emotional outbursts and histrionic displays, they can avert the alleged divine temper tantrum that will have if the Christian Right doesn’t get its way in California, and they vote against Proposition 8.

Goosestepping in from Colorado Springs will be the nefarious James Dobson, the head of the US Christian Right multinational Focus on the Family. He’ll join the opponents of same-sex marriage in their set piece, for twelve hours on the aforementioned day.  Convicted Watergate fraudster Charles Colson (now a fundamentalist) and Tony Perkins of the Christian Right’s Family Research Council will also attend.

Meanwhile, though, the Christian Right’s activities have galvanised the troops on our side of the debate. The “Courage Campaign” has located the Call’s campaign video on Youtube, and is using it to mobilise progay voters against the same-sex marriage ban referendum.
