Faced with the likelihood of a devastating defeat for the US federal Republicans only a fortnight from now, Focus on the Family has thrown a shrill temper tantrum, and circulated what it considers to be a dreadful warning that purports to be a “Letter from 2012.”
Dutifully, I downloaded this drivel and ploughed through this sixteen pages of potty pontifications from the predatory US Christian Right multinational in question.
So, what happens? President Obama has the good fortune to appoint four US Supreme Court judges due to old age and infirmity amongst more elderly conservative and centrist judges. In early 2010, this newly liberal-dominated US Supreme Court fulfills our dreams and strikes down all federal and state legislation that has previously banned same-sex marriage. From this point on, it gets weird. New Zealand still has scouts and guides, and our Human Rights Act 1993 didn’t change that, but theirs close down due to the successful passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Oh, and they pass hate speech ban legislation. In a trice, fundamentalist private schools close down, as do their adoption agencies, exgay organisations, and even fundamentalist faith-based organisations, because they can’t discriminate against LGBT job applicants who apply for secular organisational positions. Say what?! All of these reforms occur within a mere two years?! Oh, and the United States finally lets LGBT Americans serve in the military.
Sorry, I don’t buy that. Surely, rather like liberal Supreme Court judges under Reagan and Bushs I and II, conservative counterparts would try to hang on for as long as possible, and prevent such high-speed agenda completion.
As for faith-state separation, apparently, someone repealed the religious freedom clauses within the US Constitutio without telling the rest of us. Fundamentalist schools are barred from meeting in public schools, using school property, praying and even proselytising, or challenging progay curriculum content.
Happily, with all the new younger US Supreme Court judges, abortion rights are safe once and for all. Even incremental anti-abortion legislation is thrown out. Boo hoo. Serves them right for their vandalism and terrorism back in the eighties and early nineties then, doesn’t it?
Adult erotic entertainment is legal (oh, so there’s no compromise, like sealed off areas of DVD hire shops or plastic-sealed wrappers in dairies and bookshops?)
Gun control becomes federal policy. I’m sorry, but what does this have to do with fundamentalist Christianity!?
Parents can’t indoctrinate their children in poorly regulated ‘homeschool’ fundamentalist outfits- so they emigrate down here, instead! NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And then it really gets ridiculous. The Iraqi War ends and in 2010, Iraq falls to a joint Iranian/al Qaeda initiative. Excuse me? Doctor Dobson? Al Qaeda are Sunni Muslim extremists, and they don’t particularly like Shia Iran’s Islamic Republic all that much. Russia retakes the Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and most of the former Warsaw Pact nations. I’m surprised that they didn’t throw in a neo-communist government. Are we supposed to believe that Medvedev and Putin are presiding over all this? But guys… their federal government is antigay and therefore, “pro-family” under your reasoning. They’re on “your” side, and anyway, surely the Russian Orthdox Church would be blessing those tanks as they roll over Eastern Europe?
It gets “worse”. The United States has a federal public health system, and waiting lists for medical services. There are tax rises, which drive small businesses out of business. Federal budget deficits rise. Trade unions are unconstrained. Obama prohibits drilling in sensitive environmental areas. Remember, you all heard it on FoxNews first, according to the footnotes on this diatribe. Again, what does any of this have to do with fundamentalist Christianity?
Even “worse”, the Federal Communications Commission dares to beef up its regulatory procedures and impose a “Fairness Doctrine”, so histrionic right-wing talkback radio hosts have to provide balance, neutrality and coverage of mainstream liberal viewpoints. This leads to the collapse of right-wing radio.
Fundamentalist publishers can’t get antigay books distributed, so several of their publishing companies go out of business. Why? Well, there’s an effective organised LGBT boycott of Amazon.Com, Barnes and Noble et al to ‘force’ compliance. Now there’s an idea…
Criminal charges are filed against former Bush administration apparatchiks for their role in justifying and lying outright about the Iraqi War.
Giant (deeeeeep breath) civil libertarian green teacher union LGBT pro-choice global warming gun control euthanasia reformer pacifist left-wing devils chase frightened fundamentalists down darkened corridors with pitchforks across the devastated land!!!
