United Kingdom: Christian Voice- Forgive Us Our Debts…Please…

Posted by: Craig Young

Stephen Green is a particularly nauseating conservative Christian activist infamous throughout the United Kingdom for his outrage at Jerry Springer the Opera, Pride marches, abortion rights, Islam and the use of Scots Gaelic in media presentations (and don’t ask me what that has to do with militant fundamentalism, I wouldn’t have the slightest clue.)

Last week, according to PinkNews, the man-Whitehouse in question was to be seen inflicting himself on the South Wales Echo, where journalist Dan O’Neill had asked that if the deity considered gays an abomination, why do we exist anyway? And lo, there descended the sanctimonious Stephen and his five acolytes, making a nuisance of themselves in the lobby before being ejected, and then singing off-key hymns outside.

But lo also, the deity did not smile on Stephen over his ill-fated lawsuit against the BBC, after an abortive attempt to bring a private prosecution against Jonathan Thoday of Avalon and the BBC’s Mark Thompson for the BBC broadcast of Jerry Springer the Opera, and financial woes did descend on the curmudgeon, to the sum of ninety thousand pounds in court fees, awarded in June 2008.

But lo, Stephen Green is crying poverty, asking Thoday and Thompson to waive their fees in the interests of ‘justice,’ and wailing that they had ‘gotten away’ with ‘blasphemy’ “at least in this life”, and that they were pursuing him into the bankruptcy courts over money he “did not have.” Oh, and he doesn’t like the fact that the National Front have started copying him and turning up to make nuisances of themselves at Pride celebration marches as well, because there are no such people as LGBT “blacks and Asians.”

Er…if he’s bankrupt, what is he doing leading a protest? Green nagged Media Wales, the Echo’s owners, complaining that they had been naughty when they’d accused Jesus of being a bronze age nomad, and cast aspersions on the nearly exclusive crowd of blokes that he hung around with.

Incidentally, apparently Thoday and Thompson’s solicitors are pursuing the financial backers of the bigot in question, who provoked Mr Green to undertake the lawsuit in question. However, it must be asked how much it costs to maintain his pressure group and website, or to maintain a vehicle used to transport his irate legions to South Wales for their latest ruminations. Can Green really not afford the costs awarded against him?

Here endeth the lamentations of the Green drone.

And lo, here is the latest news about the trials and tribulations of Silly Saint Stephen, as told by the UK National Secular Society… http://www.secularism.org.uk

“Mr Green said that he has been served with a statutory demand that was the first step in bankruptcy, with a charge on his house. He said that he did not have the full amount that was being demanded and that if his house in Carmarthen were to be sold then he would be homeless.

Green said that he did not regret his action, even though the blasphemy law has now been abolished, and that maybe his action helped speed that process. He says that he will now concentrate on “street-witness” (i.e. bellowing through a megaphone at hapless shoppers).”

    And here endeth the lesson…
