Despite having almost achieved total legislative equality in most western nations, we remain bedevilled by the consequences of responses to innocent, innocuous public displays of affection.
Why shouldn’t we be allowed to hold hands, kiss and display other signs of intimacy that straight couples take for granted? Well, there’s always the risk of homophobic violence from straight men. However, if there’s resultant discrimination from providers of goods and services, there is something we can do. Remember, the Human Rights Act 1993 has outlawed discrimination on the basis of lesbian and gay sexual orientation here for the last fifteen years, so complain to the management of said providers of goods and services, and they’ll counter this.
It’s time to reclaim our right to public space!
