It seems to be the season for gay zombie movies, given that I’ve reviewed Vidkid Timo’s At Twilight Come the Flesh Eaters from the late nineties, Bruce LaBruce’s current Otto, Or Up With Dead People - and now, Michael Simons’ Gay Zombie, a short film (20 min) riff on the subjects of HIV/AIDS and gay male “body fascism.”

According to the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival blurb about the movie, it all goes something like this:

“Miles is a sexually-confused zombie dealing with multiple issues. Following his therapist’s advice, Miles does a bar crawl in West Hollywood and meets a special someone named Todd, who brings him to his house to meet his friends. The group hangs out in the jacuzzi and gives Miles a makeover - all the while the connection between Miles and Todd grows stronger. Todd brings Miles to a yoga class where they encounter Scorpio, a goth yoga thug who dislikes and offends Miles. During this conflict Miles proclaims his new-found sexuality, which disgusts Scorpio.”  

Hmmm. A goth yoga thug? Sounds like a straight workmate of mine, somewhat. Anyway, though, Miles is more responsive than Otto, and what better significant other than a beauty consultant to cover up those problematic signs of bodily decay.  And yes, there are parallels with the bodily changes associated with opportunist infections related to immune system dysfunction in the context of HIV/AIDS.  And hey, at least Miles is obviously a well-behaved example of the undead, not engaged in cannibalism and other depradations.
